Link to article

FOr some reason, officers were called to remove a chained dog from under a truck. The dog was lured out with dog biscuits but instead of grabbing the chain, the officer grabbed the dog's collar. The dog bit him once. The officer then shot him twice, killing the dog.

Toledo Police Kill Dog Because Kids Won't Listen

April, 2011 - Toledo, Ohio

A dog of unknown parentage gets loose and is totes chasing people. This is so freaking epic that police are called to enforce the rule of law - dogs don't run loose, and they certainly don't get away with chasing people!

The police arrive and notice the dog chasing kids. This dog is so dangerous that some of those kids broke a sweat or maybe scuffed a knee or something. In an attempt at fighting the stupid with logic, police tell the parents to get their kids inside. But the parents or kids don't listen and instead of moving the children themselves, police take it upon themselves to just go ahead and execute the dog.

Youngstown police massacre two dogs protecting puppies

In the first shooting, the dog had taken up residence in an abandoned home with her puppies. She had bitten one person who got too close to her litter. An animal control officer had spent seven days trying to capture her, to no avail. It is unclear what methods were used to try and catch the dog. When police arrived, the dog protected her puppies the only way she knew how, by trying to get the threat to go away. She charged at the officers and was shot twice. The puppies were confiscated.

The second shooting is far more disturbing. The dog and her mate lived near a junkyard and had attacked one of the employees there. Police were called. One dog was tranquilized but the other dog proved to be quite aggressive.

So the following happened:
  • Dog was shot once, dog backed away from the threat and ran to hide from the officers
  • Officers pursued injured mother dog, shooting her once while she lay under a shed.
  • When the dog stood up, not aggressing, she was shot a second time, then third time.
  • After shooting the dog four times, she officer shot her another two times until he was out of ammunition.
  • The dog has now been shot six times
  • The officer shoots the dog four more times
  • At this point, the dog charges officers, trying to escape the shed.
  • She crawled to hide underneath a patrol car.
  • The officer either drove over the dog or managed to drive away, revealing the dog.
  • So she could be shot another three times.
  • She finally died.
This dog was shot twelve times. And no, she was not a pit bull. The three puppies were confiscated.

Steubenville police shoot dog attacking another dog

A dog is dead after getting into a fight with another dog and being shot by a police officer.

What we know:
- Both dogs were loose, one a stray (the attacked dog), the other either let out or escaped from his yard.
- The owner of the larger dog attempted to separate the two but without avail.
- Police were called and an officer used a taser on the attacking dog.
- When a taser failed, the officer shot the dog twice, killing him.
- Apparently there is a pregnant female on the property where the attacking dog lived.
- The stray dog ran off

Kettering police shoot loose, biting dog

A dog running loose attacked one adult and bit the pant legs of a juvenile. Police were called. The officer noticed the dog acting aggressively and withdrew his service baton. When the dog charged, he hit the dog with it. The dog returned for another charge and was shot by the officer in the ear. The dog was later caught with a catch pole and returned to his owner who was only cited for failure to license and for allowing a dog to run loose.

Lakewood police taser dog twice

A loose dog exhibiting classic fearful and, quite frankly, non threatening displays was tasered twice by Lakewood police. The police also insist the dog is a pit bull when the dog is clearly a Boxer. I mean, clearly.

I'm glad they didn't use a gun which is always more lethal than a taser, but doesn't Lakewood have an animal control? The taser's video shows a dog who I could have gotten six feet from and lassoed with a catch pole. The taser's video also shows a dog who is clearly not a valid threat and is acting like a scared dog willing to flee.

Now the owner has to prove his dog isn't dangerous even though his dog did not bite or scratch any human being and simply had the misfortune of being in a town where police confused Boxers for pit bulls and don't act sorry about it.

Blanchester police taze dog

Blanchester, OH police chose to taze a dog in lieu of shooting him. Why?

“Miller and Ptl. Casey Gray then approached the dog in the back yard of 204 S. Columbus St. and Miller tried to grab its collar and the dog tried to bite him,” Reinbolt said. “Due to the number of people in close proximity, the officers used sound judgment and stunned the dog with an electric taser to subdue it instead of attempting to shoot it,” the police chief said.

Ohio police shoot 15-lb dog

A small dog was shot and killed by Blue Ash police after the dog bit a police officer twenty-six times on both hands. These weren't little nips, the guy is going to need reconstructive surgery and serious physical therapy to repair the damage caused by the dog.

And why did the dog bite? Well, the dog was running loose and police were called. When they arrived, they ended up cornering the dog on the front porch. This is where it gets ugly. One of the officers attempted to pick up the cornered dog and that's when the dog bit him. A lot. So, the officer shot the dog three times, leaving a blood stain and spent bullets on the dog owner's front porch (which the owners got to discover after coming from a funeral).

It was stupid of police to try and pick up a frightened, cornered dog. This is when training on how to handle loose dogs comes in handy. A cornered dog can easily be caught with a catch pole and this dog would still be alive if police in Blue Ash were equipped with such a device OR they had an animal control officer who was. An alternative would be to send one of the officers off to find a board or a leash to loop around the dog's neck while safely cornered.

I'm not saying this dog wasn't dangerous - he was. But not because he was bad or unsound or generally a mean dog. He was dangerous because he was cornered and afraid and exhibited a very low bite threshold when challenged. I don't blame him, either. Instead of using some common sense, police tried to handle a frightened dog and he bit, a lot. Then they shot and killed this dog.

Wellsville police kill dog

This is a totally odd story out of Wellsville, Ohio.

So we have a dog owner who keeps their dog outside, chained. Prior to the chaining, the dog had a history of running loose and charging at people. The dog appears to have been kept on a 3' chain. At some point, the dog got loose and bit/nipped a 3-yr-old child.

Okay, here's where it gets weird. Wellsville has one animal control officer. That isn't weird. What's odd is that she apparently takes calls in her personal vehicle and has her kids with her. And, while she has a catch pole, it's broken. I mean, come on people, a catch pole is $50 and is rather helpful when catching dogs. The ACO only has a wire crate as well that isn't sufficient for transporting potentially aggressive or stressed dogs.

ACO calls police. Police come out and when the dog lunges,an officer shoots the dog. They don't know if the dog was hit, as he ran under a porch. Instead of trying to help the dog or transport him to a vet, they get permission from the mayor to shoot the dog a second time, killing him.

Then, ACO officer takes the body and buries it in a human cemetery. Seriously. You can't do that. Not just because it's illegal (it is) but also because you're supposed to send dead biting dog bodies to get their head examined for rabies. Well, in this case, it probably wasn't necessary seeing how the dog owner had the dog vaccinated and licensed. So, really, when you KNOW who the dog belongs to, the proper thing to do is maybe ask the owner if they want their dog's body back. Just saying.

Youngstown officer kills dog with shotgun

A Youngstown police officer shot a stray dog with a shotgun, killing the dog. According to the news article, the dog was shot because an animal control officer was having difficulty snaring the dog with a catch-pole.

Officer cleared in death of dog he shot 13 times

In mid-April, a police officer shot a 42-lb, 7-mos old dog 13 times when the dog ran up from the basement after a fleeing suspect ran down into the basement. The suspect, by the way, was not related to the owners of the house but did know the owner's son.

Unsurprisingly, the officer has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

Dog shot 13 times for coming up the stairs

Youngstown, Ohio police shot a 42-lb dog 13, yes THIRTEEN, times while in pursuit of a juvenile suspect. The dog was in the basement when one of the suspects (the son of the residents but not living at the home at the time) ran down into the basement. Three officers pursued the juvenile and, when they opened the door, the 7-mos-old puppy came up the stairs.

While the dog was prostrate on the ground, he pumped another 5 bullets into the dog. And finally, he placed the gun inches from the top of the wounded, dying dog's head and blew her brains out.

Dog killed during drug raid

A dog was shot and killed during the execution of a drug raid that yielded 10 g of cocaine and some xanax pills. Guy was a real class act jerk, sounds like.
