Family of Slain Dog File Lawsuit in Commerce City
In February, while responding to an accidental 911 call, an officer encountered a 35-lb mixed breed dog barking at her. She claims the dog began charging her, at which point she shot the dog in the head, killing the dog.
Now, the family is filing a federal lawsuit in the hopes of preventing a similar tragedy.

Officer shoots, wounds pit bull
LONGMONT, CO — A Longmont police officer shot and wounded a pit bull that charged him early Monday morning, according to police reports.
Officer Nate McManus was responding to a domestic violence call on the 1800 block of Meadow Street, where another officer was talking to a woman. As McManus approached, the woman’s dog charged him, barking and growling, Cmdr. Tim Lewis said Monday.
McManus drew his gun, waited until the dog was within a couple of feet of him and fired. The woman was able to corral the dog and told police it suffered a minor injury to its right hindquarters.
According to police reports, she told supervisors she would have done the same thing in McManus’ position, Lewis said. Police officials plan to review the incident, which is done whenever an officer fires a weapon, Lewis said.

Colorado Springs, Colorado
Two officers were let into the home by children (is that even legal?) searching for a suspect no one at this home actually knew. They were warned that a dog was in the bathroom where Deanna Gonzales was taking a shower. When the officer opened up the door of the bathroom, s/he was bitten once on the wrist. Instead of closing the door, the dog was shot and killed when he (understandably) lunged again...all the while Gonzales was inches away showering.
In this report, the dog is called a pit bull.
But in another, the dog is labeled a Labrador Retriever - pit bull mix.
So, we have a case where officers didn't seek adult permission to enter a home, knew that a dog was secured in a bathroom, entered the bathroom anyways, shot a dog in the head when he freaked out and bit an intruder (dogs don't know cop from burglar) and then didn't have the foresight to shut the darn door. Fascinating.
