A dog described as an American Bulldog or Pit Bull was running loose. The dog got in a fight with another chained dog and menaced people. Police arrived and the dog entered a yard. Instead of blocking the hole in which the dog entered to, you know, confine the dog, police apparently milled around.
When the dog got back out of the hole and charged the officers, he was shot and killed.

Charleston, SC Officer Kills Family Dog
Date: May 25, 2011
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
An officer responding to a dispute call at a home arrived to find one or more German Shepherds loose. According to the owner of the dogs, she asked the officer to wait while she put her dogs away. He got out of the vehicle and one of the dogs apparently charged. He shot the dog in the head, killing him. A veterinarian, not an expert on bullet trajectory, feels the shooting was not in mid-charge.

Biting dog shot by Anderson County deputy
A deputy responding to a hang-up 911 call encountered a dog on the property. As he was exiting the property, the dog nipped him in the leg. The officer was able to shoo the dog away, but the dog attacked again. When the dog bit for a third time, the officer shot the dog once. The dog was later euthanized.
The owner claims she was attempting to corral the dog, an 11-mos old pup, although she failed after the dog attacked the man three times.

Dog shot by police in 2006 dies of unrelated causes
In 2006, police arrived at a home because of a dog bite report. The victim had been bitten by a family member's dog and had gone to the hospital. Her own dog had been tied up out front. When the officer arrived, the tethered dog growled once and the officer responded by shooting the dog in the head. He was on a 5' tether.
The city never formally apologized though they did pay for all veterinary costs.
Recently, the dog died from pancreatitis, unrelated to the gunshot wound.
